MCLUSKY

"my band is better than your band"

(quote from "To Hell With Good Intentions")

Mclusky is (/was) an excellent noise rock band. Not to say my favorite noise rock band.

It's Jon Chapple's thrilling distorted bass and Andy Falkous' (aka Falco) unique voice and lyrics combined with original songwriting that put this British three man combo far ahead in the league of european noise rock since the late 90s. In 1998, to be more precise, is when Falco and the drummer Mat Harding met and a band called Best was born soon. They released a single called "Huwuno", before they employed Jon Chapple on the bass and called the whole thing Mclusky, like a principal in some soap opera.

The first long player got released on a local label called Fuzzbox in 2000, after which their exposure increased and they got signed by the label Too Pure soon and got sent to the USA for recording their next album "Do Dallas" with the legend Steve Albini (Helmet, Nirvana). In 2003 drummer Mat left the band and got replaced by Jack Egglestone. The third album, supposedly Mclusky's creative summit, got released in 2004.

Andy Falkous: "We simply walk into the rehearsal room, plug in and play. Organised chaos, I suppose. Later on I listen back to the tapes and add and subtract whatever seems to be required at the time. Occasionally, songs will be written at home and then brought in and fleshed out although this isn’t so common."

Then came the shock for all Mclusky fans: Jon Chapple left the band for his side-project "Shooting At Unarmed Man" in the beginning of 2005. That meant the end of Mclusky in the way we knew and loved it. But, fortunately, "SAUM"'s first album "Yes, Tinnitus!" is not a disappointment for most of the part, and Andy and Jack are working on promising material in their new band "Future Of The Left".

Andy: "Music doesn’t really have a cathartic function for me, I simply feel compelled to do it. As for 'if McLusky never existed' I can’t really deal in hypotheticals, but I suppose I would have been in another band doing a similar thing and wearing similar clothes in a similarly sloppy way." (Interview from 2004)
